At the far end of the Gryffindor table there a pair of fourth years were having an argument about their relationship in heated whispers, the girl in question livid, the boy in question red in the face. Somewhere along the Ravenclaw table, a group of various yeared boys were playing a focused game of wizard’s chess, all silent until a great move was made, in which case loud cheers erupted from one side and groans from the other. Three Slytherin girls were switching between eyeing the Ravenclaw boys and gossiping loudly, paying to attention to the two boys at the far end of the table who were doing the same towards them.
Only one girl sat at the Hufflepuff table, but she wasn’t paying much attention to her surroundings. Her plate of food had barely been touched, pushed to the side to make room for the massive textbook sitting open on the table before her. Defense Against the Dark Arts was possibly Hestia’s worst subject, and she had always had much difficulty with it. It wasn’t that she liked it less or that she spent less time pouring over its textbook than all the others, but rather that a certain degree of confidence was necessary for any defensive spell to work properly, and Hestia never seemed able to muster that amount of self-assuredness when asked to.
She simply wasn’t a confident person, especially when put next to her sister. Then again, Gwen had not the focus nor care for her studies, so she didn’t do very well in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Unlike the boy her twin was casually fooling around with, Gwen didn’t get good grades simply by showing up to class every once in a while. She was a quick, clever girl who picked up material quickly, but she did require some bookwork. Hestia was much to thank for any time her sister spent pouring over books, but no matter what she did, Gwen would never be caught dead in the Great Hall with a textbook, much like Hestia was now.
Why Professor Declan had decided to assign them so much material or their mid-year exam was a mystery to Hestia as it was anyone, but she was spending less time complaining about it and more time sticking her nose in her textbook. Still, despite reading her chapters over and over, her spells simply lacked the gusto and spark that they required to work properly, an endlessly frustrating battle. Hestia, whose spells were remaining lackluster, was much more disheveled than she usually liked to appear because of it. Stressed over the test, which would take place tomorrow, her hair was up in a messy bun much more like Gwen’s usually was, and she was sporting a Hufflepuff Quidditch Team t-shirt and black yoga pants. Hestia, who usually wore lovely little flats and nice cardigans and dresses, had already been mistaken for her sister twice that day (which seemed silly to her, as anyone who knew Gwen knew that, as much as she loved her sister, she would never support the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team).
Glancing up at the plate of food she refused to touch, Hestia sighed and turned back to her book. She refused to sleep until she’d reread the chapters a couple more times. That’s all she could do, and even then, she’d still convinced herself that she would fail. What a way to finish the semester…
