fade into me, fade into youwhen i'm broken, you're the one thing i need Winter break had not gone well for Alice. She had done what she needed to do, but that didn’t mean she liked doing what she had to do. She lied to her father about where she was going for a day. She exchanged Muggle money. She created a fake identification card that made it so she didn’t need permission to get an abortion and she had one. She had an abortion. It hadn’t been easy to get one and it was scary as hell to even walk into the doctor’s office and persuade him to let her have one. But she did it. Alice had come close to not doing it. She knew it was a life she was getting rid of. It was an innocent one. One that didn’t deserve what she was going to do to it.
That was why Alice had been moody every since she got back from winter break. She smiled and laughed and made jokes, but that didn’t mean she was alright. It had been over a month and Alice still wondered what would have happened if she didn’t go through with it. For one, she would have been showing. Her stomach would have swelled up to show that she was pregnant. She would be getting so much more glances in the hallways. And Merlin knew, her parents might get Sirius Black to marry her. Oh, that was going to work out so bloody well.
Right now, she was seated at the back of a Transfiguration class. She was almost certain she needed to vanish the snail in front of her as part of some revision. Alice waved her wand half heartedly, which didn’t do her much good. Or the snail for that matter. Half of the shell vanished, along with some part of the slug. Transfiguration needed concentration and Alice certainly wasn’t concentrating. She didn’t listen to much of what the Professor said. Alice liked Transfiguration; she needed to be good at it to be an Auror. When the Professor dismissed them, the blonde took her bag and dragged her feet out of the classroom. It was her last lesson for the day. She was going to go back to her dorm and lay on her bed until dinner. That was a very good plan. Very good indeed.

Frank had had something on his mind for quite some time, or more specifically, someone. The someone that had been on his mind hadn’t changed-- no, the poor boy had been infatuated with Alice for years-- rather, the reason she had been on his mind changed. For years, he had been smitten with his friend and apparently everyone knew it except her, and he didn’t know that everyone was well aware of it. Poor Frank had thought he’d done a wonderful job at hiding his feelings. He thought he was smooth. Unfortunately his shy, awkward, stuttering nature was a dead giveaway for others. Except Alice.
Until the dance. She kissed him at the dance. She had wanted to ask him to the dance, but she didn’t. Instead she didn’t ask anyone and his date had been his friend. But his friend made him dance with Alice despite how shy he was. And then she told him she was pregnant. Pregnant. Alice was pregnant. Young, sweet, Alice was pregnant. It still blew his mind that someone like her would get knocked up. He cringed. He didn’t like those two thoughts together. ‘Knocked up’ was such a harsh term for such a lovely girl. Ever since the dance, their relationship had been quite strained and awkward. He didn’t know where he stood with her and he certainly didn’t want to press her. She was probably quite consumed with the fact that she had a baby growing inside her, rather than wanting to deal with Frank at the same time.
”Alice! Hey, wait up!” Frank caught up with the young blonde after class and slowed his long strides to walk in time with her. As usual he felt like his obnoxious height made him loom over her but he tried to ignore it. ”You headed back to the common room?” he asked, assuming the answer was yes. Not to be stalkerish, but he had noticed she spent a lot of time in her dorm, away from people. Away from him. ”I’ll walk with you, if y-you don’t mind,” he said, trying to be strong and not awkward and shy but probably failed. Who knew? ”So...” he said and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. ”How have you been? We, we haven’t talked much lately and I just wanted to make sure that you, y’know, were alright. With things.”
